Meetings
Our programme alternates between member’s evenings and special guest evenings, with the occasional “ Hands – On “ evening.
On member’s evenings, we take along items that we have made or are making, for a sharing of advice or know how. We ask our questions and benefit from each others experience. Twice a year we hold a competition. The winner of which holds the Ralph Fellows trophy for 6 months. We have tome to talk and share refreshments together and the opportunity is there for those wishing to buy or sell tools, timber or other items. Members are also able to borrow books or DVD’s from our library. We have on occasions gone out together to visit a place of interest, to woodworkers, with a pub lunch thrown in for good measure.
Special guest evenings enable us to listen to a talk or watch a demonstration by some of the country’s top professional woodworkers. For the wood turners we have had demonstrations by John Berkley, Tracey Owens, Ray Jones and Gary Rance. We have had talks and demonstrations from professional makers of contemporary furniture, musical instruments, walking sticks, country chairs, miniature models and we have watched a wheelwright and a coracle maker at work. Probably our best ever night was when Michael Painter, reputed to be the country’s finest carver, shared with us the skills which have given him this reputation. We made this an open evening and fifty two visitors came along to listen to him.
